Scoliosis

  • Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. While the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown in most cases (idiopathic scoliosis), it can also be caused by congenital factors, neuromuscular diseases, or injuries.

Scoliosis can range in severity, with mild cases often requiring only observation and monitoring. However, more severe cases can lead to pain, postural changes, and, in some instances, breathing difficulties. Some people are candidates for surgical intervention, and others are in what we would call a ‘gray area’. Our goal at Align is to support you in whichever stage you are in, and ensure you are able to feel comfortable and supported in your body.

  • Pilates is a system of exercises that focuses on core strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Compared to other forms of exercise, Pilates can be a beneficial addition to a scoliosis management plan. At Align, our experienced practitioners integrate Pilates into physical therapy and chiropractic treatment plans. Here’s how Pilates at Align can help with scoliosis:

    1. Strengthening Core Muscles:

    • Pilates emphasizes core engagement, which is crucial for supporting the spine and improving posture.

    • Strong core muscles can help stabilize the spine and reduce strain on the back, potentially easing pain and discomfort.

    2. Improving Flexibility and Range of Motion:

    • Scoliosis can lead to stiffness and limited range of motion in the spine.

    • Pilates exercises promote flexibility and controlled movement, helping to increase range of motion and reduce stiffness.

    3. Enhancing Body Awareness:

    • Pilates encourages mindful movement and a heightened awareness of body alignment and posture.

    • Improved body awareness can help individuals with scoliosis make conscious adjustments to their posture throughout the day, potentially reducing strain and discomfort.

    4. Addressing Muscle Imbalances:

    • Scoliosis can cause muscle imbalances, where certain muscles on one side of the body become tight and others become weak.

    • Pilates exercises can be modified to target specific muscle imbalances, promoting more balanced strength and flexibility.

  • While any qualified Pilates instructor can work with clients who have scoliosis, a ScolioPilates certified instructor possesses specialized knowledge and training to address the unique needs of this population. Dr. Catherine Clement, our in-house Scolio-Pilates therapist, is who we recommend for our scoliosis population.

    • Understanding Scoliosis: A Scolio-Pilates certified instructor has a deeper understanding of the complexities of scoliosis, including different curve patterns, postural deviations, and potential limitations.

    • Tailored Exercises: They are trained to modify and adapt traditional Pilates exercises to accommodate the specific needs of individuals with scoliosis, avoiding movements that may exacerbate the curvature or cause pain.

    • Specific Techniques: Scolio-Pilates instructors often incorporate specific techniques and exercises designed to address muscle imbalances, improve spinal alignment, and enhance breathing mechanics, which are crucial in managing scoliosis.

    • Progress Monitoring: They are skilled at observing postural changes and progress, adjusting the exercise program as needed to ensure the client's safety and effectiveness.
